NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — On this third Monday of January we celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Memorial events were held all across the country and right here in Hampton Roads, Monday.

In Norfolk, the community came together for a breakfast and march in honor of Dr. King. Organizers say the march focused on healing a racial divide in the community, using the peaceful tactics Dr. King stood for.

In Suffolk, the S. Delois Mayes Foundation hosted a benefit event where some high school students received money to continue their education.

10 On Your Side’s Brandi Cummings sent in pictures of the scholarship brunch. She addressed the crowd about the theme of sharing the dream and shaping the future.

Dr. King famously advocated for civil rights by organizing peaceful demonstrations. In doing so, he left a legacy people around the world choose to honor.
